The Berenstain Bears’ Please and Thank You Book {Review and Giveaway}

As a book lover myself, I love any chance to instill a love of books into my boys.  Gathered together on one or the other of their beds at night, cracking open the pages of a new book is always one of my fondest memories to make with them.  When the book teaches them a childhood lesson, even better!

About the book

The cherished Bear family is coming to a new generation of toddler and preschool readers.

Stan and Jan Berenstain introduced the first Berenstain Bear books in 1962 and the Bear family celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2012!  Here the charming and lovable Bear family is once again introducing children to the typical issues and questions that they face every day.

In The Berenstain Bears’ Please and Thank You Book, little readers are introduced to the importance of manners, through gentle reminders given to Brother, Sister, and Honey as they await their milk and cookies.  The short story and well-loved characters provide toddlers a perfect introduction to valuable life lessons and routines.

Mike Berenstain grew up watching his parents work together to write about and draw these lovable bears.  Eventually he started drawing and writing about them too.  Though Stan died in 2005 and Jan in 2012, Mike carries on his parents’ love of creating Berenstain Bear stories from southeastern Pennsylvania, which looks a lot like Bear Country.

My thoughts

As I slid my copy of The Berenstain Bears’ Please and Thank You Book from the envelope fond memories of reading the Berenstain Bears’ stories  growing up came flooding back, like when old friends come to visit.

  The bright colorful illustrations beckon you to open the book and invite you to stay awhile.  My children sat enthralled as Mama Bear taught Brother, Sister, and Honey a sweet lesson in manners, with my oldest chiming in with the answer each time Mama Bear would ask, “What do you say when_?”  I like that Papa Bear joins in the lesson at the end with his manners on full display for the cubs as well!  I recommend that anyone with small children pull up a seat, open this book, and make some memories as your children tag along while lessons are learned along side these beloved characters!

Open {Five Minute Friday}

This post is a part of Five Minute Friday, a writing flash mob that happens every week when writers are prompted by a single word to write for 5 minutes without any major editing.  Just raw thoughts and emotions.  You can find out more and/ or join the party here.

Open wide the doors to your heart.  Let His love be all consuming.  Let it change the very core of who you are into who He made you to be.  Open the pages of the book He left to instruct, to teach, to comfort, and to pull us through to a time when we will see Him again in Heaven or on Earth.  Let His words sink in so much that they become like second nature to recall.  Write those words on the tablet of your heart.  Let them shape your remaining days.

Even when the world tells you this isn’t normal, be open.  Open to a love that can overcome anything.  Open to words written long ago for the very purpose of shaping the person you are to become.  Open to promises that were planted in hearts as dreams to carry you to the place He has just for you.

You are a treasured child.  Be open to all the love and teachings and great big things that He has for you!

Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart.

Keep {Five Minute Friday}

This post is a part of Five minute Friday, a writing flash mob that happens every week when writers are prompted by a single word to write for 5 minutes without any major editing. Just raw thoughts and emotions. You can find out more and/or join the party here.

This is one of those posts I really didn’t want to write because sometimes it’s just hard to bare the most fragile parts of your heart for all to see.  The more I shied away from writing it, the more I felt God urging my towards it.  So, here goes nothing…

In last weeks Five Minute Friday post I wrote about the wait for a husband and how desperate I feel in that sometimes.  This week the word is keep, and help me, the first thing I thought was keep away!  I feel like I’ve been playing a game of emotional keep away with my heart for the last few years.  It’s fun to flirt a little bit, but the second something seems like it might go past the lightness of that, I can feel my blood run cold and those familiar fears come rushing in.  When you’ve been through a relationship that was quite literally hell on Earth, well let’s just say that KEEP AWAY sign is quite prominently posted in front of me at all times.  Once bitten, twice shy?  Ooo, twice seems like such a gross understatement.  The thought of being vulnerable enough with someone else to let them love me seems terrifying.  But, I’m gonna trust that when God brings him, that He will push me and my walls and fears aside so I don’t get in the way of the love story He is writing for me.  That the one who holds my heart in His hands can heal all the broken pieces and teach me to let love in.

Flash Mobs!

I find deep and abiding joy in flash mobs; yes, flash mobs. I love them! Give me music and/or dance and I am there. I would love to participate in a flash mob, or at least see one in person sometime. Of course for me to be involved in a flash mob it would have to be planned for a year or two out. This momma can’t dance. I have some rythm, but remembering and following dance moves? Forget it! The only dance I have ever been able to do without the instructor directly in front of me is basic salsa. Come on now, that’s just rolling your hips. I can remember the instructor saying as long as you get the hips down don’t worry about the foot work too much. It will come eventually.One of my NYC dance partners at the time did not agree however. Poor Luis used to get so frustrated with me. Just follow me”, he would say. The problem with that is I have no idea how to follow. I figured as long as I knew what I was doing and you knew what you were doing everything would work out just fine, right? As it turns out, not so much.  Oh, how I do miss those nights of dancing.  They are but a distant memory as I get ready to strip a chicken and pack it in single use portions for freezing.  But, down the bunny trail I seem to have gone….

I love that flash mobs have swept the globe.  That I can turn to youtube and watch flash mobs that have been recorded from all over the world.  It is such an amazing thing to me that all these people, who sometimes have never even met, come together in seemingly perfect unity for a single moment in time.  They come to surprise, to entertain and to show off their individual talents for anyone who happens to be lucky enough to be present during their performance.  I love that they usually start small and grow larger and larger as people continue to join in!  Then they just walk away as if nothing ever happened.

It is in the most unlikely of places that you often find the messages that this broken world most desperately needs.  There is hope in these gatherings.  That strangers can unite together as one entity to spread joy, with no great cause to face down, no tragedy to overcome, well, it speaks hope to me.  Hope that this world isn’t quite as lost and broken as it sometimes feels it is.  These little messages are there, you just have open your eyes and look for them.

So, I thought I would share some of my favorite flash mobs I have seen recently.  I hope you enjoy!  If you have a favorite, leave a link to it in the comments section.  I would love to see it!  🙂

This one leaves me with wet eyes and images of the Von Trapp children in their drapery play clothes floating through my mind.

This one brings forth the emotion that only truly beautiful music can.

Who doesn’t love a sweet proposal!
